Our History

The Carbon Negative Alliance was founded to help businesses, particularly those in the services sector, become carbon neutral and then take the next step to becoming carbon negative.

Our team’s experience includes work with the Ocean Drilling Program, the second largest U.S. National Science Foundation program after NASA, as well as post-graduate research at the University of Southampton with a full scholarship from the Natural Environment Research Council (NERC), the leading funder of UK environmental science.

Our Inspiration

We took our inspiration from the landmark announcement by Microsoft regarding their plan to be carbon negative by 2030 as well as the vision of The Earthshot Prize – the most ambitious and prestigious of its kind – designed to incentivize change and help to repair our planet over the next ten years.

We found that while there were plenty of organizations and consultancies helping larger corporations and product-centric businesses, there was limited information or support available for the small and midsize business (SMB) market and the services sector.

We believe the services sector which includes the fastest-growing sectors by GDP can play a vital role in addressing climate change.

Our Principles

Be a purpose-driven brand

Be a purpose-driven brand which invests as much, if not more, of the percentage of our annual proceeds into non-profit carbon reduction efforts as the best-of-breed non-profits. We will also fully and clearly disclose our fees, the use of proceeds and how much money reaches the projects.

Ensure transparency

Ensure transparency by disclosing how frequently retirements will be made after purchases are completed and provide the unique serial numbers for the retired credits as well as direct links to these retirements to our clients and customers. These will also be publicly accessible from our website.

Support sustainable carbon prices

Support sustainable carbon prices that cover costs for developers and contribute to behavior change on the buyer side.

Avoid Greenwashing or SDG washing

Avoid Greenwashing or SDG washing from both a project perspective and when communicating climate action efforts from a client/customer perspective. All communications will be open, honest, clear and transparent. It is important to accurately state what has been achieved and not to over-claim or “greenwash.”

Educate our customers on how to reduce first, then offset, and how to go beyond carbon neutral and take the next step to become carbon negative.
